Program: The Volga River Cruise Experience
Russia’s history, culture, and daily life has always intrigued me. However, I wasn’t ready to be the planner of a do-it-yourself trip to this country. A river cruise seemed like the perfect alternative. Our 14-day cruise started with four days in Moscow, seven days on the river, and four days in St. Petersburg. We saw a little of city life and country life. The perfect combination.
Deb Killarny My husband Mike and I have lived in Kalamazoo since 2003. We both retired from airlines. This gave us an opportunity to travel. After we retired we continued our travels to other European countries by EuroRail, and most recently to Iceland and Russia. I volunteer with various entities in Kalamazoo. That is how I met Jerolyn Selkirk at the Ladies’ Library Association. She was very helpful in our planning for this Russia trip.

Program: The Aral Sea: An Ecological and Human Tragedy By Philip Micklin
The Aral Sea is a formerly large lake lying among the vast deserts and steppes of Central Asia that has suffered severe desiccation at the hands of man. In a scant 50 years it shrank 90%. Wide-ranging ecological and human problems have accompanied the drying. These have primarily affected people living near the sea in the new nations of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Concealed by the Soviet Union, the plight of the Aral was fully revealed in the mid-1980s when Gorbachev assumed leadership of the USSR. Since then major efforts have been made by the countries of Central Asia, international agencies, and Western and Asian countries to improve ecological and human conditions in the Aral region. These have met with varying success. The Aral drama illustrates how easy it is for humans to wreak havoc on our planet and its people but also how through careful, thoughtful action devastated territories may be able to be brought back.
Philip Micklin is Professor Emeritus of geography at Western Michigan University where he taught for 30 years. Most of his research work has focused on water management issues in the former Soviet Union and the new nations of Central Asia. He has spent considerable time in the Soviet Union, Russia and the new nations of Central Asia. He was given the WMU Distinguished Faculty Scholar award in 1992.
