KRCA’s After Potluck Presentation
Meet the Author, Mary Segur
“Gold Coins on the Black Sea”
Mary is a retired high school English teacher, born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. She learned about her ancestors' experiences as immigrants in America from her grandparents. While teaching English and American literature for over 25 years, she often pondered writing a novel about her family because they had told her such fascinating tales. She has sponsored three foreign exchange students; from Russia, Japan, and Ukraine. She also sponsored an exchange teacher of English from the USSR in the autumn of 1990, and was sponsored in return by that same teacher when she travelled to the USSR in the spring of 1991 with a group of American exchange students. She is a long-time KRCA member.
Some reviews:
“…I loved the history, it was so interesting to learn all that information about Greek, Turkish history. The story flowed well and I couldn’t put it down. Absolutely loved it!”
“…Political authoritarianism, religious persecution, genocide, and a sheer twist of fate. It’s an historic immigration story that is so informative of what’s going on today. As a descendent of Greek immigrants, myself, I could not put this book down. The author does an excellent job of telling you about these characters against a backdrop of historical context.”

There are over 250,000 Peace Poles “planted” in every country in the world, each one dedicated as a monument to peace! Our Peace Pole in Crane Park has four sides and displays the phrase “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in the six languages that we feel best reflect our sister-city partnership with Pushkin and the diversity of our local community: English, Russian, Potawatomi, Spanish, Arabic, and Chinese.
We are excited to be part of the Peace Pole Project and we encourage city officials, local peace-builders, and our long-time supporters, to grasp this opportunity to support world peace and strengthen our relationship with our sister-city Pushkin, and people from Eastern Europe and throughout the world.
